Lawn

What's the 1/3 Rule?
This is a very important rule that will keep your lawn healthy and looking great. You should never cut more than 1/3 off your grass growth during a single mowing. If your grass is 3 inches tall, you can safely cut off 1 inch. You should not mow your lawn more than this as it will cause severe stress and increase its vulnerability to diseases, insects, drought, and weeds. If your lawn is very tall after you have been absent for a while, it's best to stick with the 1/3 rule. You can mow 1/3 of your lawn one day and then wait for a few more days before you mow the remaining 1/3.

These are the common regional grasses and their heights.

  • Bahia – 2 to 3 inches
  • Bermuda - 1/2 inch to 1 inch
  • St. Augustine – 2 to 3 inches
  • Zoysia – 1/2 to 1 inch

Landscaping

Is the planting depth really important?
Yes! Yes! Plants should be placed with 20% of their root ball above grade. You should not cover the root ball with soil. To prevent weed growth and retain moisture, use a thin layer (one to two inches) of mulch.

What amount of mulch should I apply around my trees and shrubs?
It is becoming a common problem to overmulch trees and shrubs. Mulch should be 3-4 inches deep. Every year, some of the mulch should be removed and replaced with fresh mulch.

What is the average time it takes for a plant become established?
The point at which new growth begins to emerge from a newly planted tree, shrub accent or ground cover is called "established". The appearance of new growth is as fresh leaves or new stems. The root system of a shrub should be established within one year. After three years, a tree will be established. It is important to water new plants more often than the established ones.

Irrigation

What are the benefits of a digital controller?
Digital controllers have been developed to improve water conservation. These controllers allow for more precise scheduling of watering time.

What are the purposes of a rain sensor?
Rain sensors automatically shut down the system when it rains. This will help you save money as you won't have to overwater. Many include lightning protection, as well as a backup battery in case of power outages.
